The change in weather seems to have encouraged toads to begin their migration in Surrey. Last night we found 30 squashes at a Merstham site and helped 25 across the road.

Temperatures around 9C-10C and light , steady rain. Many frogs also on the move and in amplexus.

We expect the toad migration to gather force tonight as conditions the same, and last year 1200 toads were helped across the road at this site.

About 700 at our crossing on wednesday night, so we were expecting the main movement last night but it turned cold and didn't rain so we only had a handful. The weather looks set cold 'till at least Sunday night so we'll have another go then. Up to 1000 animals per night at the height of the migration.

Here in north Oxfordshire (Banbury) it still appears to be just the less explosively emerging frogs moving about. Toads in this neck of the woods generally get on the move anytime between mid' march & early april but so far - at least in my garden - there's not been even a peep out of 'em yet. Shouldn't be at all long now though. I'll report back when they finally start to make moves here.  Mick38786.3815856481

Can anyone help?

CBS news are doing a feature on 'toads on the move' in the UK.  they would
like to get film coverage of the 'mass movement' of toads (ideally) eg.
crossing roads, and are looking for any sites within a reasonable distance
to london.  (they have trundled down to somerset a couple of times with no
luck, as the weather has changed on the way!)

The producer is a good friend of mine and is interested in wildlife, so the approach would be sensitive and respectable.

Yes, we have a couple of sites that would be suitable in Surrey. Migration recommenced last night as now warm and wet. Expect good migration 25th and 26th (1000+).

Please contact me by phone for details.

Durham toads have started now- males only on Saturday night, a few females on Sunday. Frogs are still spawning as well.

This is much the same as the last few years, both species usually spawn in the last couple of weeks of March.
